The primary focus of your tour is to locate and observe the giant sperm whale. On average, guests encounter between one and two whales per excursion, due to the length of time these animals can remain submerged. Sperm whales tend to travel in loose groups, often several kilometres apart, so sightings of more than one or two whales during a trip are considered a real bonus.
Around 80% of the world's whale and dolphin species migrate past the Kaikōura coastline, making it possible to encounter a variety of marine mammals at any time of year. These may include blue whales, humpback whales, minke whales, pilot whales, orcas, southern right whales, as well as common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, Hector's dolphins, New Zealand fur seals, elephant seals, and leopard seals.
