Whether you’rebackpackingor doing a campervan road trip in Australia, ringing in the New Year in Sydney is an unforgettable experience. Sydney is one of the world's most famous cities for its spectacular New Year's Eve Fireworks.
The city puts on its best festive decorations and is illuminated nightly.
It’s summer here, so "Sydneysiders" are on vacation, and BBQs pop up in parks and on the city’s many beaches. But the best part of the season is New Year's Eve itself.
Where to watch the Sydney fireworks?
The race for the best viewing spots starts early. In the Royal Botanic Garden, , one of Sydney's emblems, queues start forming as early as 5 AM, gathering hundreds of people eager to secure the best vantage point for the breathtaking show 19 hours later.
The Botanic Gardenremains the most crowded spot because it's the best known, closest to the centre, most beautiful, and offers the absolute best views of the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House.
But it’s far from the only spot. The banks on the opposite side of the bridge are also hugely popular, with crowds gathering by 7 AM.
Potts Point is an ideal location, while Cremorne, a bit further out, is also a great choice—you might even have it mostly to yourself until 9 AM!
Don’t worry about the long wait. If you’re lucky, the weather will be beautiful.
Be sure to bring a picnic blanket, plenty of snacks, and, most importantly, sunscreen! Time will pass quicker than you think. Keep reapplying that sunscreen, and consider making friends with your new neighbours.

Top public sites to watch the fireworks
Circular Quay
This is an ideal spot for the best possible view of the fireworks, offering a complete panorama of the show. However, it's extremely popular, so expect a massive crowd. The site is closed once it reaches maximum capacity. A little further east, you can head to The Rocks for a view of the Harbour Bridge, or the Opera House, but these spots will also fill up quickly.
Observatory Hill Park - Upper Fort Street, Millers Point
This park provides a great view of the western side of the Harbour Bridge (partial view of the full show). You can sit on the grass and enjoy the show. Remember to bring your own food and drinks, as alcohol is not permitted.
Capacity: 2,000 people
Giba Park - Point Street, Pyrmont
Giba Park is a small, family-friendly park that offers a good view of the western side of the bridge (partial view of the show). You'll need to bring your own food, but alcohol is permitted.
Capacity: 1,595 people
Pirrama Park - Pirrama Road, Pyrmont
This larger site is perfect for families as it is less crowded than some of the other spots. You'll get a great view of the western side of the bridge and the Sydney Harbour. It’s a great place to have a picnic and enjoy the day. Alcohol is not permitted.
Capacity: 4,000 people
Bicentennial Park - Chapman Road, Glebe
This large grassy area can accommodate a lot of people. It's a great option if you want to avoid the biggest crowds. You can access the park via Federal Road, Northcote Road, or Chapman Road. Alcohol is permitted.
Capacity: 19,000 people
Practical Tips and advices from your local experts
December 31st is a logistical challenge in Sydney. Whether you're staying in a hotel or a campervan, caution is key:
- Traffic and Parking: Traffic is severely restricted for New Year's Eve. Most CBD streets are closed, and it's virtually impossible to drive into the city centre.
- Campervan/RV Advice: If you are on an RV road trip and you're in Sydney for the celebration, we strongly advise you to book a campsite outside the city and use public transport (trains, buses, ferries) to get to the centre.
- Prioritize: Once you've found a good place to enjoy your New Year's Eve, try not to move too much. It will be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to attend two major events in one night. Choose your spot early, be patient, and enjoy the moment.
