Driving the legendary Great Ocean Road

Okay, we’re probably not the most objective people to put a road trip first, but honestly, we believe it’s clearly the best way to discover Australia! It gives you maximum freedom to fully enjoy your trip.

We favour the Great Ocean Road because this section is uniquely beautiful and perfectly suited for all types of travelers. The route is relatively easy, and the infrastructure is perfect for a first-time RV or campervan road trip, as well as for more experienced travelers. Prepare to encounter Koalas, Kangaroos, or Emus in the wild—they are very common here!

K-Gari (Fraser Island) en 4x4

K'gari (Fraser Island) is the world's largest sand island, located on the East Coast of Australia in Queensland. This island, roughly 75 miles (120 km) long and 15 miles (24 km) wide, has been listed as a World Heritage Site since 1992.

Important Note: You will not be able to take your campervan to Fraser Island. You will need to rent a 4WD vehicle from Noosa or Hervey Bay to explore this sandy paradise, where everything is set up for 4WD discovery (small forest tracks, vast sand beaches—watch out for the tides!).

You can choose between a private 4WD that you drive yourself or joining a guided group tour. To best experience the island, we recommend staying a minimum of two days. You can spend the night camping in a tent or staying in a resort. If you do camp, be very cautious of the Dingos that are numerous on the island.

Sailing the Whitsundays, Queensland

The Whitsunday Islands archipelago is a stunning collection of 74 small islands situated on the northern part of Australia's East Coast. Most of these islands are uninhabited, but you will find resort accommodation on the four main islands.

Join a group tour or rent your own catamaran to discover this magnificent natural spectacle. With its tropical rainforests, pristine white-sand beaches (like Whitehaven Beach), and turquoise blue sea, you will want to soak up every second. This small slice of heaven is the perfect place to relax in an idyllic setting. We recommend staying a minimum of one night and two days on your boat to make the most of this unique location. You can charter your boat from Airlie Beach, the gateway to the Whitsundays.

Scenic Flight above Uluru

In the middle of the Australian Outback (desert), you will find Ayers Rock, also known as Uluru. This emblematic site is a key symbol of Australia and the Aboriginal culture.

We highly recommend taking a Hot Air Balloon scenic flight over Uluru, which offers the most spectacular view of the region (it is best to book flights around sunrise or sunset). Note: Many tourists used to climb the rock, but this practice is strongly discouraged by the Aboriginal people as it is a sacred site.

The Pinguin Parade on Phillip Island

Phillip Island is located 93 miles (150 km) South of the vibrant city of Melbourne. You can easily access it with your rental campervan because, despite its name, this region is connected to the mainland.

While the island offers magnificent beaches and landscapes, the highlight is the famous Penguin Parade. Every year, thousands of tourists visit Phillip Island to watch the small penguins arrive on the beaches. The penguins' arrival times vary between 5 PM and 9 PM, depending on the season.

Kakadu National Park, Northern Territory

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kakadu National Park is one of the most iconic national parks in Australia.

Located about a 2-hour drive from Darwin, the park spans 7,700 square miles (20,000 km²) and boasts exceptional biodiversity, incredible landscapes, and a rich Aboriginal culture and history. You can take a river cruise to see the crocodiles up close.

It is a fascinating place of history, nature, and spirituality—a vital destination in the Northern Territory, especially for RV travelers seeking authentic natural discoveries and immersion in Aboriginal culture.

Snorkling at Ningaloo Reef

When people talk about snorkeling or diving in Australia, they usually think of the spectacular Great Barrier Reef.

However, for us, Ningaloo Reef has a unique appeal that you won't find anywhere else. It is less crowded and more accessible than the Great Barrier Reef; the aquatic world at Ningaloo Reef is located right off the beach. There is no need for a boat excursion to reach the coral! You can spend hours swimming alongside colorful fish, dolphins, and you might even spot whale sharks or humpback whales. It is best to visit from March to late September. In the late year, turtles arrive on the beach for the breeding and nesting season.

Surf the Australian coast

You will see surfers all along the Australian coastline. Surfing is an integral part of the local culture and is a beloved sport.

There are countless places to surf in Australia suitable for all skill levels. If you have never surfed before, there are magnificent small waves perfect for learning. For more experienced surfers, there are world-class spots across the country.
