Tourist Visa (evisitor)

This visa is THE essential visa for visiting Australia as a tourist for up to 90 days. You can also apply for this visa to participate in WWOOFing or if you wish to visit family, such as your children who live there.

It is free, and 90% of applications are approved in less than 48 hours.

You will often see it referred to as the "eVisitor visa" because it is an electronic authorization attached to your passport. It is the eVisitor (subclass 651). You must submit a separate application for each person, even if these individuals (children) are listed on your passport.

You can apply for the eVisitor Visa Subclass 651 here. Other tourist visas are available if you are not from a country eligible for this subclass 651 visa.

Working Holiday Visa (WHV)

This visa is very popular for people under 35 who wish to stay in Australia for up to 12 months. With this visa, you can also work to finance your stay, study for up to 4 months, and enter and leave Australia as many times as you like.

The cost of this visa is AUD 670, and 90% of applications are approved in less than 40 days.

Note that this visa can be extended for a second and even a third Working Holiday Visa, but there are specific conditions for renewal.

For more information, visit the official Working Holiday visa (Subclass 417) page.

Other visas are also available for working, studying, or immigrating. See the complete list of visas for Australia.

Practical Tips and advices from your local experts

When planning a trip to Australia, we strongly recommend taking out travel insurance to cover any potential health issues or unexpected hiccups along the way. You can learn more on our dedicated insurance page here.

Also, keep in mind that you must hold both your home driver’s license AND an International Driving Permit (or a certified translation here) to drive and rent a van in Australia.

Arriving in Australia

That's it! You now have your visa and are packing your suitcase for Australia.

There are a number of things you cannot bring into the country or that you must declare.

Here are some examples of products that absolutely must be declared:

  • Honey, bee products
  • Cheese and all dairy products
  • Culinary herbs
  • Meat
  • All nuts (food)
  • Pâté / preserves / jams / ...
  • Food in general
  • Seeds and plants (generally not allowed in the country)
  • Cigarettes (maximum 25 cigarettes + 1 opened pack)

In the plane

The cabin crew will give you an arrival card that you must fill out before going through customs. You will need to provide the following information:

  • Surname, given names, and passport number
  • Flight number
  • Intended address in Australia
  • If you intend to reside in Australia for the next 12 months
  • Customs and quarantine declarations
  • Country of departure
  • Date of birth and usual occupation
  • Nationality as stated in your passport
  • Contact details in Australia and contact details of an emergency contact person.
