Different camping options in New Zealand
New Zealand is the ultimate camping country. All across the islands, you'll find top-quality facilities to park up and spend the night in your campervan.
Here is a quick overview of the different camping options available for your road trip.
Okay2Stay
Okay2Stay is a unique way to experience New Zealand's finest local produce by campervan. Dozens of artisan winemakers, olive growers, cheesemakers, and craft brewers welcome you onto their private properties to enjoy a safe, free night's stay. There are roughly a hundred of these locations scattered across both islands.
Once registered, we will send you your login details to access the Okay2Stay website, complete with property photos, reviews, locations, and interactive maps. Your saved stops for the trip can also be exported as a PDF for offline access on the road.
Don't wait—get your Okay2Stay membership today and taste the best local flavours every region has to offer!
DOC Campground
Freedom camping
Freedom camping regulations have become much stricter in recent years, and non-self-contained vans are mostly no longer allowed to freedom camp.
However, freedom camping is still fully permitted with a self-contained motorhome or campervan (equipped with a fixed cassette toilet and waste water tank). You simply need to observe local restrictions in prohibited areas. With a bit of research, you'll easily find stunning, secluded spots to spend the night in pure nature!
Please remember: always pack out all your waste when freedom camping. New Zealand is a clean, green paradise—let's keep it that way. Thank you!
Kiwis Holiday Park and Top10
Kiwi Holiday Parks and TOP 10 Holiday Parks are classic campsite chains with over 100 locations across the country. TOP 10 offers top-tier, 4- to 5-star facilities, often complete with playgrounds, swimming pools, and great amenities.
Perfect for families, these holiday parks allow you to plug into powered sites so you can get maximum comfort in your campervan (powering microwave, electronics, etc.).
Kiwi Holiday Parks are slightly more modest (3- to 4-star standard)—well-equipped, clean, and comfortable without the extra frills.
